Howdy PARTNER

Recommended Posts

We recieved word this morning that a lot of us are being flown out to meet the ship tomorrow, and that we had 24 hours to pack all of our belongings and get our affairs in order since we won't be back until December.

This is about two weeks earlier than expected, so, surprise! I'm going on deployment. Not really sure what communication's going to be like on the ship, so worst case scenario I'll talk to you all in about two months.

Just officially got hired for an IT specialist position. Gonna be making 48k a year, so that means plenty of dakimakura covers and trips to akiba.

This is probably going to get me out of the rut I'm in, hopefully.

Quick update while I'm on the shitter at work. Everyone in the IRC channel will know that that IMMINENT DEPLOYMENT ended up not happening at all. They put us on working parties until the actual flight. Last week I did manual labor in a warehouse, this week I've been working in the post office. Word came in that we're leaving Saturday for reals, and it looks like they were serious this time. I'm ambivalent but cautiously excited about deployment. On one hand I want to hurry up and hit the fleet, get qualified, and do my job for real so I can start progressing my career and continue to work on my officer package. On the other hand, it's deployment. That means working every day and no leaving the boat for months. We'll see how it goes. This test run will be very telling about the future.

I met a girl at the post office. She's 6'2 and very much a female version of me physically and mentally. We've hit it off and appear to be dating, but we'll see what an immediate 2 months of separation does for that.

Another couple weeks and I think I'll be able to pay off all of my college loans.

Get wrecked bullshit system that wanted to keep me in debt for like 10 years.

S' been a while, I might as well post to try and desperately keep the board breathing.

Lets see. In the past month...

-I've tried to get an internship but my GPA wasn't high enough (2.55, needed 2.75), so I have to have a co-op(paid) position instead. A really great place called Zone CG (lol) wanted to hire me on, and loved me in the interview, but I couldn't convince them to pay me anything. I emphasized that the money wasn't important and I don't care what they paid me; I would even give it back if they wanted. But in the end the administration wouldn't budge and instead I took another position at the local hospital. In their application, they listed that I had to know how to shoot video with an iPhone and edit in iMovie. It should be obvious but that is laughably simple and it wouldnt take me any effort at all. I wanted a challenging place that could help me hone my skills (Zone appeared to be the best in Cinicnnati) but I guess that's not happenin'.

Well they weren't paid either. so I couldn't go to them. You see the problem? So now I found a THIRD place. they are finally paying me. I still doubt I'll be able to graduate on time though.

-Met a girl on tinder (I was on tinder for like 4 days before I met her and deleted it), she's really nice but wasn't artistic at all, totally a dealbreaker for me, I broke it off before it even started, really. Didn't want to go with something just because and deal with a breakup later.

-Started looking at properties with my dad. The way it seems now I'll live wherever he moves after we move out of our old family house I'll probably live there for a few years while I solidify my career and find a place of my own. There was this cool building that was an old lawyer office, its basically 2 apartments and offices put together. the other ones were townhouses, and in a cruel twist of irony across the street form the old catholic school I went to and got removed from in 2004. From where my entertainment room would be I can see into the classroom where the worst experience of my life was. So obv I'm not into that property. Hopefully we'll look at some more places in the next few weeks.

Well it's sure been a minute. Strapped for time but quick update. New car. Second full time job, effectively doubling my annual income. New house. Squeezing gym time in every other day. Fixed my telescope. iPhone 6 for free.

Now that I'm clear of the holidays and haven't been fired from my fancy new startup job as my paranoia had been telling me I would be, I feel like it's safe to say that I'm living in some kind of absurd dream. I quit a really great job just as I was about to get a kickass promotion, left behind a swank downtown Austin apartment, moved to the most expensive area in the country with no place to live and no job, played the whole fucking thing by ear, and god damn if it didn't work out better than I ever could have hoped through a series of last minute strokes of luck.

This is kind of thing I could only dream about last year, and now once again dreams are made real and nothing's been compromised! Living in Berkeley is as great as I never dared to hope, and working in downtown San Francisco as well. I don't get it you guys. What did I do to earn all of this? Moving out here, I was ready to live in a dumpster and work like a slave to get a taste of the good life, and instead the good life is jumping down my throat. This is beyond impostor syndrome, this is fear of the cosmos seeing this imbalance and putting me back in my place.

Anyways, let me regale you all with terrifying true tales from the San Francisco startup scene. If you've seen HBO's Silicon Valley or any other caricature of the industry, then you basically know what it's like because it's all gallingly true. Money flows like water, and wonderful places to spend it are a stone's throw in every direction. From the paned windows set in the exposed brick walls of my office, I can look down upon the high dollar restaurants and other startup offices of downtown, and three blocks away is Market Street. All the desks have Macbook Pros and huge Apple monitors on them, and if I want a new iPhone, or some candy, or a bottle of bourbon, I have but to ask and it gets delivered within a day.

Madness is the only word for it.

Golly, PJ has its very own witness to Russia's backslide into totalitarianism. Hope you can get out before they seal the borders, Jack. Godspeed.

So yeah, we're pretty much underway again. Sea trials and ammo/fuel onload this week, then we start up the real thing after a very brief stop back in port. Catch me on facebook, but other than that, see you all in six months! It's sure going to be something.

Hey everybody!

I've been on hiatus over the last few months..

Did anyone notice?

...

...

Anyway, I graduated from college. It was hell, I had 5 classes and a co-op this semester, but I pulled through. All the while I had a list building up of projects and maintenance which can now be addressed.

Freedom! Time to apply to every video production place I can think of...

I just realized that one of the few things I derive true pleasure from anymore is whenever I get to be a contrarian asshole and people actually take it seriously. That feeling when you set someone off by being too right or alternatively dumbfound them. Too good. That's kind of a sad thing to be true about me though. Oh well.

Some of you will have seen this on the facesbooks already but I got hired for a software development/integration traineeship at a company that specialises in custom software solutions based on Microsoft tech (asp.net, c# etc)

the company's extremely chill, everyone's on first-name basis with everyone including the CEO, and they're still top scoring Microsoft partner and have won the dutch employer of the year award 5 or so timies in the past decade, benefits are fantastic

the only con is that the work ultrabook is a dell latitude e7450

I mean it's a fantastic machine but I was hoping to get in on sum o dat Surface Pro action because those things look fancy as hell

Nice. I worked in a pretty similar Microsoft shop last year, likewise voted one of the best places to work in Texas all the time. It was still boring and stuffy but they treated you right and if you were willing to settle down they'd pay well and keep you employed forever.

Still, learn Unix.
